Web13 dec. 2012 · I use a cordless drill and drill a 3/16 dia pilot hole first. Then screw the step in. I use a 16" pipe wrench to unscrew the steps (1) turn each in Feb after the season. This keeps the tree from swallowing the step. I use these treehopper bolts. A special drill bit on a cordless drill makes the right size hole. From there on up I use single hang-on steps. Easy to put on the tree and never had a problem with them. As for spacing, I put my foot on the last step then put the next step even with my knee.
