WitrynaThe external intercostals (r, l) are muscles of the thorax that extend from the tubercles of the ribs behind to the cartilages of the ribs in front. Their fibers are directed obliquely downward and laterally on the back of the thorax, and downward, forward, and medialward on the front. System: Muscular Region: Thorax WitrynaThe external intercostals are the most posterior of the two, extending from the vertebrae to the costal cartilages, whereas the internal intercostals extend from the angles to the ribs to the sternum. Innermost intercostals: Origin, insertion, innervation
WitrynaThe intercostal muscles are divided into the external group, fibres of which run in a caudal–ventral direction from their upper rib and are deficient anteriorly, and the less powerful internal group which have fibres running caudal–dorsal from their upper rib and are deficient posteriorly. WitrynaThe external intercostal muscles originate on the inferior surfaces of the proximal parts of the ribs and insert on the superior and distal parts of the next lower rib. The muscles extend from the tubercles of the ribs behind, to the cartilages of the ribs in front, where they end in thin membranes, the external intercostal membranes, which are continued forward to the sternum. These muscles work in unison when inhalation occurs. The internal intercostal muscles relax while the external muscles contract causing the expansion of the chest cavity and an influx of air into the lungs. There are three principal layers; 1. External intercostal muscles also known as intercostalis externus aid in quiet and forced inhalation. They originate on ribs 1–11 and have their insertion on ribs 2–12. The external intercostals are responsible for the elevation of the ribs and bending them more open, thus expanding the transverse dimensions of the thoracic cavity.
